The New Inn, Lechlade, watercolour on Arches 140lb Rough, 121⁄2X18in (32X46cm). The layered approach and perspective lines help to lead the viewer’s eye to the archway
The atmosphere, colour and movement of street scenes cry out for dynamic brushwork, coupled with a simplified approach to capture the fleeting moment. Whether en plein air or in the studio I usually add my figures where they will enhance the composition, not where they happen to be in a photograph! Figures add depth, scale and movement and a typical street scene will be an equal balance between buildings and people.
