Frank Bingley Trafalgar Square, lino cut, 113⁄4X161⁄2in (29.7X42cm)
Since retiring from his day job, art has become Frank Bingley’s main hobby, and most days will find him painting and printing both at home and with fellow artists at art clubs, courses and workshops. This linocut of Trafalgar Square was inspired by a wet February day in London. He writes: ‘Emerging from the tube station, just a short walk brought me to Trafalgar Square, where I just stood in awe of the magnificence of the scene, with the towering Nelson’s Column, huge black lions and fountains, all set against the backdrop of the iconic National Gallery.
I took out my camera and started photographing the scene as I knew it would be great material for a painting at a later date. The first painting I did was in watercolour, but I’ve been venturing into lino printing and wondered whether I could recreate the scene with a linocut.
