Porthbeor Beach, The Roseland, acrylic on canvas, 153⁄4x193⁄4in (40x50cm). The context of the cliffs helped me portray the distance, as did loose downstrokes for the water with a large flat. Extreme contrast and detail was reserved for the immediate foreground, with a rigger for the foliage and a medium filbert for the waves

The distance we see between us and the horizon is about three miles, and obviously our view increases with height. Looking out over the sea above Porthbeor beach in the Roseland, the view can stretch to about 15 miles (above). That is a lot of empty sea to express in paint!
