Pulling it altogether

A NEW WAY OF WORKING: 4 TH OF 4

In late summer 2016 I rented a house in the Yorkshire Dales so I could paint them. This is the fourth and final part of the story of how an idea becomes a project, a project becomes a show, and how you can avoid the artistic mistakes I’ve made along the way.

Regular readers may recall that by early 2018 my new project ‘Beyond Here’ had taken an unexpected turn from landscape painting towards creating a more temporal experience of being there: I wanted to capture something more than simple, pretty views. We pick up the project, which has now developed a life of its own, as I prepare for its launch in October this year.

Artistic baggage

I’ve heard it said that a painting is never finished, only abandoned. I can confirm that it’s true; in fact what’s true for a single work is more so for a show. ‘Beyond Here’ was always going to be a two-year project, but over the last couple of months I felt as though I’ve only just begun to paint. I’ve been putting this last article off because I’m certain that the best picture in ‘Beyond Here’ is just around the corner.
