The Artist Open Competition 2018

We are proud to present the work of some of our talented prizewinners in this year’s annual open competition, organised in partnership with Patchings Art Centre. Our thanks go to everyone who supported the competition and especially our generous award donors

The Artist Purchase Prize & The Artist Exhibition Award

Hilary Carr Wonder, oil, 19¼x17in (49x43cm).

‘I live and work in north-west England and central France. I paint almost exclusively in oil, having come to prefer working with the nuances of what I see over a longer time, with always the option of scraping it off. I paint flower and still-life subjects, in the studio and en plein air, and have always been interested in dereliction and decay in one form or another. In the studio I sometimes let the set ups stay for a few weeks to age naturally. This is the third of three paintings of a rose in a glass, and I like the way the flower changes into something else as the water evaporates and time passes. It challenges the idea of beauty only being found in the fresh and the new.

‘I strive to paint tonally and use a limited palette of ultramarine, permanent rose, raw and burnt sienna and white, with cerulean and cadmium yellow as extras. I try to reserve white until towards the end of the painting as I especially like transparent darks and the depth they can give.’

About The Artist

Welcome to the October issue in which many of our top-class artists celebrate painting in a variety of locations in all kinds of weather, from Pete the Street Brown in Havana, to Geoff Hunt who shows how not to let an unpromising day spoil your painting. Our artist-tutors also offer help and advice on colour mixing in oils, how to improve your compositional awareness, use gouache to paint atmospheric landscapes, create luminosity in your paintings by combining cold wax and water-soluble oils, and develop your skills by working in monochrome. Paul Talbot-Greaves suggests a simple exercise to help you loosen up, Julie Collins shows how to mix the right greens for your watercolour paintings, while Glyn Macey invites you to learn from the painting style of Lamorna Birch by following this month's demonstration. Plus, be inspired as we introduce many of this year's The Artist Open Competition amazingly talented prizewinners!
