‘The orange ground makes the complementary blues glow. I like pink with orange as it embraces two seasons: pink for spring and orange for autumn, so am always drawn to that colour combination. The horizontals were chosen to create a bit of receding space.’
Fascinated by figures, impromptu moments, colour and light, Sarah Butterfield uses paint to explore relationships between humans and their environments. When she was seven years old, Sarah won a competition for a painting of the Jabberwok. ‘I remember arriving to the art class late, so there were no pinks and pale blues left and I just used all the muddy colours and won a prize! I learned early on to use what I had.’
