The Lady  |  4th October 2019
Dear Readers
Dogs, as over 8 million of us besotted owners know,
are rather good at giving advice, or rather, leading by
example. As Emma Block reveals in her beautifully
funny illustrated tale of lessons she learnt from her
dog. Love at First Sight is real she says, and if you are
in any doubt, think about that the next time you meet
a puppy. Can a puppy be posh I wonder? Probably not when they are
chewing the carpet but certainly when they are sitting on the lap of
a duchess. Hugh Kellett’s new Dictionary of Posh is addictive. A rare
and hugely amusing study of pronunciations and how they change
our language. Take the word Mention for instance, for us normal people this means to Remark Upon, but for speakers of ‘Posh’ it denotes
a large house!
Large houses don’t come much bigger than the majestic looking Waddesdon Manor as Anna Price discovers. A home that built for entertaining on a Gatsby like scale.
Miss Darcy Bustle is planning to do some more entertaining now
that she has filed her last column. Although I suspect she may just
lounge around the house with Lulu Guinness the cat watching Homes
under the Hammer. Certainly, like me, she is finding it hard to say
goodbye, but the time has come. Thank you for all the wonderful
words of encouragement you have given me over the years. For putting
me right when things have been wrong, and for being so generous with
your letters. I do hope you will keep them coming. The Lady is yours,
dear readers, I leave her in safe hands.
