GUNS IN AMERICA: COUNTING THE COST OF A MASSACRE
How many more people have to die in a hail of bullets,” asked Ronald S. Safer in the Chicago Tribune, “before we do something?” Last October, fifty eight people were killed at a music festival in Las Vegas; in November, twenty six people were gunned down in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Now a
gunman has killed seventeen at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in
Parkland, Florida. The “Valentine’s Day slayings” were planned with “chilling precision”, said Allison Klein in The Washington Post. The alleged shooter, Nikolas Cruz, 19, arrived at the end of the school day equipped with a gas mask, smoke grenades and a semi-automatic rifle. He pulled the fire alarm and “waited as his victims began pouring into the halls”. The rampage lasted a mere six minutes. It was the second deadliest shooting at a US public school.
