FAST LEAN STRONG
Many trail runners neglect working on speed and power, figuring that, even for shorter distance off road events, explosive power and top-end speed are unnecessary for what are predominately steady paced efforts. But by developing speed, your ability to turn your legs over quickly and power your dynamic and explosive strength you’ll improve your all-round running ability. With improved top-end performance, slower-paced running isn’t as close to a maximal effort, so you’ll be more efficient at these lower intensities. Having a bit of explosive power to call upon can be beneficial for a sudden steep
ascent or bounding over a stile, and is also beneficial for fast descending. Improved speed is great for fast overtaking on narrow and technical trails, and for that finish-line dash.
