The Life and Times of Kay King

So where do I start… From the beginning I think.

I was born on the 20th July 1945 at Sally Oak Hospital in Birmingham, a biological boy John Stanley Halford. For the first few months, I was brought up by my Mother, as my father had not been discharged from the Army after the war. We lived in a small flat over some shops in West Heath. Once my father was home we moved to a house in The Fordrough.

I don’t remember much of my early years, however at the age of five we immigrated to Australia. We lived in a small seaside town in Queensland called Sandgate which was situated just a few miles south of Brisbane on what is now called the Gold Coast.

My time in Australia was a happy and I can remember it well. I was a bit of a loner, I hated most sports, the only sport I did enjoy was swimming. I had more girlfriends than boyfriends - I think this was because they were gentle and not rough like the boys, and I enjoyed their company. I had one very special girlfriend Carolyn, though. We were both in the same class at school, and it was our parents who became friends having met at the local tennis club that brought us together. We were both only children, both the same age, and the same height.
