I knew, around 6 years old, that I shouldn’t have been born a boy. Things fell apart at home around that time, and although I wasn’t part of that - my father was caught having an affair - I was told by him I was now ‘man of the house’. It was now to be my responsibility to look after my mum and my older sister. The realisation that my body wasn’t the one I expected it to be, and the fact that I could do nothing to change that, did not sit well with me.
