Cruise control

What is it like to cruise on a houseboat at Kariba, and what makes it such a unique and novel safari experience? By Lauren Jarvis

The anatomy of a cruise boat

While they may vary in size and number of berths, and some are more luxuriously fitted than others, most houseboats on Kariba follow a similar core structure. They are, effectively, fully equipped and catered mini-hotels, similar to any cruise ship elsewhere in the world.

1 Pool deck

Soak up some sunshine or take a cooling dip in the pool, watching the wildlife as you wallow. Some boats are equipped with a jacuzzi.

2 Sun lounge

Here’s where to make yourself at home with a good book, play cards or relax and share the day’s stories.

3 Bar

Often the hub of activity: the place for welcome and pre-dinner drinks, or winding down with some snacks, a cold drink, glass of wine or the local Zambezi beer.
