Running a camp in remote areas is no easy feat, and is often underappreciated – but the impact of your visit on the staff is significant

There is a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes in order to manage a safari lodge to modern-day standards. And these logistics often mean the staff to guest ratio is considerably higher than you would find in city hotels.

But who are the people who make it run like clockwork? And most importantly, what impact does your stay have on them?

Tourism is the primary source of employment in most wildlife areas. As Jess Salmon of Flatdogs Camp, South Luangwa, says: “Tourism now provides over 60 per cent of the jobs in our area.”

Tourist dollars fund staff salaries, which often support their extended families and multiple dependants. Thus, the wider comunity benefits both socially and economically.
