HOME FIRES
As TV Times strolls through the delightful Cheshire village of Bunbury, we’re greeted by the incongruous sight of cottage windows bearing masking tape crosses to prevent bomb damage. There’s also a group of people in 1940s hats and suits, all heading towards the church carrying gas masks. We’re on location for the return of ITV’s powerful World War Two drama Home Fires. Bunbury is once again standing in for the fictional Great Paxford, where the stoic ladies of the Women’s Institute rule the roost. The dark shadow of conflict is evident in a scene we watch being filmed from a pew in the 14th-century church. After the congregation sings a rousing hymn, vicar’s wife Sarah Collingborne (Ruth Gemmell) delivers some shocking news. Then the church bells peal for one last time by order of the government, only to ring again to warn of impending danger.
