Vegan Life  |  November 2020
Welcome to November. Winter is officially here! And it has brought with it frosty mornings, early sunsets and, in my house, a strong desire for mugs of hot cocoa (and the occasional mulled cider!). November also means that Christmas isn’t all that long away, so it is time to start planning presents and food. Instead of hitting the shops, why not surprise loved ones with handmade and homecooked edible gifts? You could make delicious chocolate truffles for those with a sweet tooth, or big jars of chilli tomato chutney to gift to friends with more savoury palates. Not only are handmade gifts thoughtful, but they also help to halt the wheel of consumerism and waste that seems to churn faster and for longer each festive season, resulting in a yearly increase of Christmas waste. Sean O’Callaghan is also looking towards December. Our columnist suggests an array of tips on how to approach Christmas 2020. It will likely look different
for most people this year, with Coronavirus restrictions and social distancing measures in place nationwide. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be any less fun! The fifth day of this month hosts the British tradition of Bonfire Night. Whilst fireworks, sparklers and bonfires can be exciting, it’s important to remember that they can upset companion animals, harm wildlife and damage the environment. Lily Woods
investigates the impact of this tradition, and explores how we can enjoy the event whilst ensuring we limit the cost to the natural world. A great way to celebrate Bonfire Night is with a smoky flavoured tea, beer or whiskey — Oliver Coningham rounds up smoked drinks that are all perfect for toasting to Guy Fawkes. Also, in this issue, Abdourahamane Ly tells us how veganism is growing in Africa and Maria Slough chats to Anita Euschen from Animals Without Borders.
Have a great month!
