Simplex History

The Simplex Manufacturing Corporation was located at 540 North Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana, and was formed in the late 1920’s in the midst of the Great Depression by Mr Joseph Paul Treen. Paul Treen was a very ingenious man. Professionally he was a full member of the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Treen had been a Harley-Davidson motorcycles dealer and had suggested the idea to the American motorcycle giant of making a lightweight motorcycle for young riders. The proposal was rejected by Harley-Davidson. Undeterred Treen decided to enter the market himself. In 1935 he designed a motorcycle capable of providing a modest means of transportation. Treen named his creation a Servi-Cycle. Production of the 2 HP machines which were capable of 40 mph lasted for a quarter of a century until 1960. Towards the end of the fifties decade sales of the Servi-Cycle declined and Paul Treen diversified into producing karts which at that time were gaining popular acclaim throughout America and further afield. In an advertisement in the August 1959 edition of Quarter Midget World, Simplex claimed to be the world’s largest manufacturer of karts.
