The remarkables

Max Verstappen and Paolo De Conto both on the first step of the podium
Photos: Vroom archive

With the start of 2020 here we are again decreeing the champion of the past decade. After Bobby Allen (1960-1969); Francoise Goldstein (1970-1979); Mike Wilson (1980- 1989); Gianluca Beggio, Alessandro Piccini and Danilo Rossi (1990-1999) Davide Foré, Marco Ardigò and Jonathan Thonon (2000-2009) the champion of the 2010-2019 decade was the talented Max Verstappen, thanks to the “Triple Crown” achieved in 2013 by winning the World Championship, the KF European Championship and the KZ World Championship, on an equal footing with Paolo De Conto, for the supremacy shown by the Italian in KZ and the 5 titles conquered.

The last decade was also the most prolific for the image of world karting thanks to the large group of young karting champions who then landed in F1, the maximum aspiration for any driver’s career.

What caused the greatest uproar was the arrival of Dutch driver Max Verstappen, and later Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris (World KF champion in 2014 and European Junior champion in 2013), Alexander Albon (European and World in Junior, 2010), George Russell (European KF3) and Antonio Giovinazzi, thus the new protagonists of the highest expression of motorsports on four wheels.

Max Verstappen, the mark of speed

Today it is easy to give space to a driver who, thanks to his exploits, has brought fans closer to F1, as has Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. But the Dutch driver, (son of Jos who raced in F1, and his mother Sophie Kumpen who left her mark already in 1989 at the karting world championship in Zaragoza in Spain to later win the Margutti on the Parma track), was also a prodigy in kar- ting; in fact, none of the drivers in F1 today and yesteryear had ever managed to conquer 3 CIKFIA titles (including the World championship) and at only 16 years of age. Like Jorrit Pex, Max was also formed with the Rotax Max, in 2013, and therefore the subject of analysis of our special report, one who amazed everyone for his competitive edge, going to win his first title: the European KZ and then the KF, to then end with the conquest of the KZ world championship again with Crg / Tm. A talent confirmed also in Formula and, precisely because of his so dizzying rise, the FIA had to invent a clause to allow Max, not yet of age (he would have turned 18 in September 2015), to accept his registration to the 2015 F1 World Championship with Scuderia Toro Rosso, thus becoming the youngest F1 driver in history.
