DEREK AND ANNE
There’s a memorable moment in the wedding scene of hit TV show Last Tango In Halifax, when Derek Jacobi’s character, Alan, turns to his new bride, Celia, played by Anne Reid and sings If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me? ‘I chose that song because I’d heard it on the radio and it had a fun element,’ recalls Derek, ‘but I had absolutely no intention of taking it any further.’ Anne, meanwhile, had a good giggle at the saucy words, but though she’s worked in cabaret for years it never occurred to her that singing would draw her even closer to her screen husband. ‘We never dreamt we’d end up making music together!’ she says. Yet life is full of surprises. By one of those strange twists of fate, that’s exactly what happened. The two actors discovered they shared a mutual love of music and, last week, they released their first album together. You Are The Best Thing That Ever Has Happened To Me. This could be the beginning of a whole new career for them both.
