Sue Johnston has had a stellar career playing some of TV’s most memorable matriarchs, in shows like Brookside, The Royle Family and Coronation Street. So you might expect Sue’s latest role to be a walk in the park for the veteran actress, as forthright mum-of-four Ivy-Rae in BBC1’s drama Age Before Beauty. On the contrary, Sue was mortified during scenes that saw Ivy-Rae picking up men half her age! It transpires that Ivy-Rae is an ageing swinger with an open marriage – at night she prowls Manchester’s Northern soul dance clubs to find young one-night stands. When we meet Sue to discuss the role, she’s warm, frank and funny about the awkwardness of playing Ivy-Rae.
