PERIOD POVERTY SOARS DURING COVID-19
New research from Lil-lets shows that in the UK, period products are out of the financial grasp of many young girls, with Covid-19 increasing the harsh impact of period poverty. It also found that Covid-19 has had a significant impact on girls’ mental health (40 per cent of young women ages 14-21 have said that lockdown has negatively impacted their mental health),
Before the outbreak, Plan International UK (plan-uk. org) found that one in every 10 teenage girls will, at some point, not be able to afford sanitary products. Understanding period poverty is helped by discussing the ‘toxic trio’: a lack of education about periods, sex and relationships in schools; the cost of sanitary products; and the stigma about menstruation.
