RedDoor Publishing is a small press that set up in 2014, operating as a hybrid between traditional and self-publishing services.
Interested writers submit their book manuscripts in the usual way, and these are subjected to an editorial selection process. Once a manuscript has been selected for publication, its author has to ‘underwrite’ or cover all the costs of the publication (editorial, design, production) of a print run of a £1,000 copies. The cost of this starts at around £4,500 but varies according to the length, complexity, design issues etc. RedDoor aims for writers to go into profit with a year of publication, and once the first 1,000 copies have sold through RedDoor, any subsequent print runs are paid for by the company and the author will be paid royalties.
In its first two years, RedDoor published fourteen titles. It plans for 25 titles in 2017 and forty in 2018.
