A quagga is a sub-species of South African zebra that was hunted into extinction in the late 19th century.
Author David James runs Quagga Books in the belief that although the novel has been declared dead, it continues to exist and develop. Since 2014, Quagga Books has run an annual Quagga Prize for Literary Fiction to honour work from independent, self-published authors. The first prize is £300, and there are also silver medal (£100) and honourable mention (£50) awards.
