For many years I’ve called for greater levels of innovation in the home building industry. Last month in this very column I announced the launch of my new educational charity the ‘Ministry of Building Innovation’ to make a systematic change in the way we will build homes over the next 30 years. Precision built homes is one of the ways forward.
At the time of writing the Government is just about to announce a momentous White Paper on UK housing calling for more homes to be built ‘off-site’ and manufactured in purpose -built factories to ‘accelerate construction’ in housing. I’ve been calling for this for over 15 years, but over that time there was no need to change the status quo as whatever was built, of any standard, would sell in boom time and when the biggest crash since the 1930s happened in 2007-08 there was no way the Government or the industry was going to invest in new research and development for precision built homes. But, now it is time and it is important that it is done in the right way.
