WHEN DAMON HILL RULED F1
This issue of Autosport celebrates two decades since Damon Hill won the 1996 world championship through Ben Anderson’s in-depth interview with the man himself. The story bears retelling because it’s remarkable that Hill raced in Formula 1 at all, let alone won a title so many did not believe him capable of. Many still question Hill’s worthiness as a world champion. But as one of only 32 to have achieved that feat since 1950, this shows a lack of respect for the determination and skill needed to do so. Granted, he might have struggled to beat Michael Schumacher had the 1996 Ferrari been the equal of his Williams, but that’s not the point. The bottom line is that Hill delivered when he needed to at an age, he was 36 years old at the time, when many drivers are thinking about hanging up their helmets. That achievement deserves recognition.
