Black+White Photography  |  October 2010
Having given up all hope of ever moving into our new flat (being married to an architect is possibly more of a hazard than I anticipated), I started to look around for something to distract me from plumber-related concerns. I have a theory that most things you really want are right there in front
of you, if only you learn to recognise them. And so it turned out. My distraction came in the form of Claire, our editorial assistant – or to be more precise, her dresses. I noticed that she seemed to have a great many of them and asked her to count them. The following day she came back with the answer – 60. The number seemed portentious. Ten rows of six or six rows of ten? It was clearly a photography project I could not resist. So every working day for the next 60 days, Claire will wear a different dress and I will photograph her in the same spot at the same time of day. I’ve always admired those photographers who stick to the ‘one a day’ rule. The question is, can we keep it up?
Perhaps starting a blog (see Dan Calder’s great feature on the subject on page 52) is the way to discipline myself. In the meantime, anyone know a good electrician?
