Here’s your chance to shake hands with the great Ken Buchanan

simonoldtimers@googlemail.com

EBA correspondent

IN the last few years, Essex EBA have produced a number of scrapbooks detailing the careers of prominent British boxers. Their latest, compiled by Chairman Tommy Burling and Secretary Raymond Lee, pays tribute to one of Britain’s finest of the 20th century – Edinburgh’s Ken Buchanan, who campaigned between 1965 and 1981, winning and defending both world and European lightweight titles overseas. Ken will be present at the official launch of the book at 5pm on Saturday May 4 at The Globe Public House, Morning Lane, Hackney, London E9 – hosted by London EBA President Stephen Powell – and he’ll be attending the LEBA meeting the next day, at the Sports Bar and Grill, Old Street, EC1 (11am start). The book will be on sale there, too, and Ken will be happy to sign copies on both days. Having been able to skim through the book, I can thoroughly recommend it. There are reports of every one of Ken’s 69 pro bouts (61 wins), together with cartoons, articles, reproductions of programmes and Ken’s full record. It’s a great souvenir of a great career. Ken originally retired in 1975, with a fine record of 57 wins and three defeats – all three losses coming to current or future world champions. Spaniard Miguel Velazquez ruined Ken’s unbeaten record via debatable decision in a 1970 vacant European title bid in Madrid (though Ken would win the world title that same year, decisioning Puerto Rican hero Ismael Laguna in San Juan).
