1 The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), a type of vulture, is the largest North American land bird. Poaching and habitat destruction caused the global population to dwindle to just 27 birds in 1987. These individuals were captured and bred at Los Angeles Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, before later being released in northern Arizona, southern Utah and parts of California. Although still listed as critically endangered, its population is increasing with further releases.
