MEET THE ARTIST Tav Flett

Learn how the compositing supervisor got his start in VFX and what his work at Lux Aeterna entails

Flett has been part of the Bristol VFX scene for eight years, and enjoys the balance it brings to both his personal and work life

As acompositing supervisor, Tav Flett is instrumental in managing the compositing A pipeline of Bristol-based studio Lux Aeterna. With over 10 years of experience working for industry giants like Walt Disney and Aardman Animations, he’s brought new tools, techniques and ideas to his projects, particularly when it comes to colour science and compositing workflows.

After working freelance with the company for three years, leading on titles like Netflix’s Our Universe, Flett joined Lux Aeterna as a permanent member of staff in February 2023. He sat down with us to talk about his origin story, career highlights, and the challenges of running a VFX pipeline.

Can you tell us about your path into the VFX industry? I started out at the University of the West of England in Bristol, studying audio production. My girlfriend, now wife, was working on a feature film for Disney in London and recommended I apply for a twoweek work placement. I think I impressed the team during my placement, because they asked me to leave education and join them on a full-time basis.

After consulting with my lecturers, I was able to work at Disney four days a week alongside my studies, commuting back and forth between Bristol and London. Despite all the travel that was involved, I managed to balance my time and graduated with a first-class honours degree in media practice with animation.
