AMAZING GERANIUMS
Want a plant that won’t let you down, that combines flower colour and will work in just about any soil and site? Cranesbills have the answer, says Tamsin Hope Thomson. Asked to name the most popular perennial plants for the border, it seems unlikely that the hardy geranium (or cranesbill) would be the first to spring to most people’s minds. Yet it is a plant we turn to again and again. And while it may not be glamorous, the hardy geranium has earned its popularity for qualities more important than showy flowers or exotic foliage – valued instead for its tough and reliable nature, for blooms that appear for months on end and for an ability to thrive in different soils and conditions.
