THE U.S. GOVERNMENT CLASSIFIES GRENADE LAUNCHERS AS “DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES.” THIS CATCHALL LEGAL TERM INCLUDES SUCH STUFF AS HAND GRENADES, FIELD ARTILLERY PIECES, POISON GAS AND THERMONUCLEAR BOMBS.
The U.S. government classifies grenade launchers as “destructive devices.” This catchall legal term includes such stuff as hand grenades, field artillery pieces, poison gas and thermonuclear bombs.
Despite their undeniable “sex appeal,” historically speaking, such stuff as this has remained altogether quite harmless in civilian hands. Crafting a nuclear device in one’s basement is beyond the capacity of most Americans, no matter how handy they are with tools, and high-explosive rounds for anything are quite literally unobtainable. As a result, privately owned grenade launchers were intriguing novelties—but little else.
