Jonathan Biggs is fourth generation in the family business, J Collins & Sons, which specialises in treen, wooden bygones and 17th, 18th and 19th century oak, country and formal furniture.
Biggs said: “Treen and wooden bygones sell well at Shepton Mallet: we have more than 150 pieces of treen in stock and put on a large display of all of them at the fair.”
Before the late 17th century, when pewter, silver and ceramics were used as tableware, the majority of items used were made of carved wood. Treen has become highly collectable due to its fine patina and tactile appeal.
