Possibly the most memorable press exposure the Folkestone Triennial has had was at its first event in 2008 when Tracey Emin left a trail of bronzed baby clothes and booties across the town to highlight the numbers of teenage pregnancies across the south-east.
This year’s line-up for this ambitious arts fest, where all the commissioned artworks will be exhibited in Folkestone’s public spaces and some of which will remain in the town, includes Antony Gormley, David Shrigley, Richard Woods, and ‘Bob and Roberta Smith’ (the pseudonym of Patrick Brill).
After reappraising the skills and activities taking place in the town, Ramsgate resident Smith, a vocal campaigner for art schools, declares this with his banner message Folkestone is an Art School, draped over a Martello Tower and elsewhere in the town – see right.
