A rather unconventional painting by the Victorian artist Joseph Farquharson (1846-1935) featured in Catherine Southon’s (18% buyer’s premium) sale in Surrey.
Offered on November 1, A river in spate was a departure from the artist’s usual snowy landscapes and trademark sheep.
The small and undated 10 x 13in (26 x 34cm) oil on canvas was consigned privately, where it had been for ‘quite a while’, and bore an old label for dealer Ernest TH Bennett.
