A market-fresh drawing of a Balinese lady by the Dutch artist Willem Gerard Hofker (1902-81) soared to £8500 at Greenslade Taylor Hunt (19% buyer’s premium) in Taunton.
Ni Rindit, a signed 17 x 11in (44 x 28cm) pastel and pencil work, was created in 1940 when Hofker was in Bali. It had been acquired by a Dutch family in Java soon after, and descended to the vendor based in Taunton.
Offered with an estimate of just £35-45 on November 2, it was secured by a Dutch buyer, bidding via one of four phones on the lot.
