This 17th century needlework casket will feature in Tennants’ Spring Fine Art Sale on March 17 in Leyburn, North Yorkshire. Dating from c.1670, the rectangular box is decorated in raised stumpwork embroidery.
On the top are two figures, thought to be Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, standing either side of a stylised vase of flowers with heraldic animals and tulips. The couple are repeated on the front panel watched over by cupid and populated with classical scenes to the sides. Estimate £6000-8000.
