NPG seeks help from trade to grow collection

£40,000 funding in place for vernacular portraits ‘owned by ordinary people’

The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) is calling on the trade to help it acquire works for a new exhibition centred on identity before the era of painted portraiture.

With the gallery awarded £40,000 of funding, the project is a chance for dealers to sell or donate works for this new collection.

Dr Louise Stewart, NPG cross-collections curator, is leading the search for portraits owned, displayed, viewed and exchanged by ordinary people. Memorial brasses, stained glass, wood carvings, pilgrim badges, English delftware and needlework are on the shopping list.
