Marines and seascapes were a strong feature of Woolley & Wallis’ latest picture sale and, while there were plenty of affordable works on offer (see box, below), the sale was led by one of the larger works by a well-recognised name.
The clearness after rain by Henry Moore (1831-95) was a 4ft x 6ft 8in (1.22 x 1.83m) oil on canvas signed and dated 1887. It came to auction with a provenance that could be traced back to Christie’s sale in 1888 of the collection of the well-known banker and art patron, Louis Huth of Hawkhurst.
