The work of the MacMahon photographic studio of Aberdeen, this extraordinary carbon print was made in 1908 and depicts ‘Giant Cod Specimens…’ bought and cured by A&M Smith, a local fish processing and curing business.
The caption on the mount is also printed in Spanish, for these great fish – average weight 77lb – were destined for export to Spain and the photograph may have been intended for display by the Spanish importer.
It sold for £1800 at Bonhams on March 21.
