So what exactly is Hallowe’en?

UNTIL around the year 1500, ‘hallow’ referred to a holy person, therefore Hallowe’en is the ‘night before All Saints’ Day’.

Hallowe’en has become thought of as an American holiday, but it originates from Britain. Historians have traced the origins to two ancient pagan festivals. Samhain was the end of the Celtic year, a very signifi- cant time for the people. Samhain marked the end of summer and the start of winter. Celts believed the dead could come back to the earth and mingle with the living on this day.
