‘WE DON’T know whether the axe heads were buried as an offering to the Gods, for safe keeping or whether they were deliberately abandoned,’ explained Stuart Campbell, archaeologist with the Edinburgh - based Treasure Trove Unit.
‘They will now be taken to Edinburgh for assessment but the presumption is they will be taken, perhaps in a year or so, to a museum in the area in which they were found.’
Excited as he was to be there when the axe heads turned up, he held a soft spot for another, more modest find over the weekend.
