Practice assistant Gemma Ferguson has gained a veterinary care assistant diploma while working at Arran Vets. This City and Guilds distance learning course is provided by the College of Animal Welfare (CAW), based in Edinburgh. Gemma started the year-long course in March last year and was awarded the diploma in April. She was supported with training and assessment in the practice and learned academic theory online. She is grateful to the clients and their pets who allowed her to use case notes for her assignments. She now plans to go on to further study with CAW. Gemma has always regretted not having the chance to train as a veterinary nurse when she left school. Training and working with Arran Vets has given her the chance to fulfil her dream and the distance learning course allowed her to train whilst living on Arran and supporting her young family.
