Council chiefs this week insisted ‘our schools are safe’ after six Arran primaries were named in an asbestos scare.
Research has found that asbestos was used in 1,638 schools in Scotland and in 30 out of 32 local authorities.
A total of 42 schools in North Ayrshire, it was claimed, could contain the substance, including Corrie Primary, Kilmory Primary, Lamlash Primary, Pirnmill Primary, Shiskine Primary and Whiting Bay Primary Asbestos was used in the second half of the 20th century as a cheap, fire-proof substance. However, it was later found that inhaling asbestos fibres could result in lung cancer up to 50 years after exposure.
