OCTOBER 2
BANK OF SCOTLAND GREAT SCOTTISH 10km, Glasgow
JONATHAN HOPKINS got just the boost he was looking for ahead of what he hopes will be a breakthrough year, Euan Crumley reports.
The Swansea Harrier, who is supported by Runfast, came home in 30:21 to beat Ben Stevenson of Falkirk Vics (30:38) and Cambuslang’s Ryan Thomson (31:08) into second and third respectively.
The Welshman will now head into some intensive winter training fully focused on some lofty goals – namely securing the qualifying standard to the run the steeplechase at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 and at London 2017.
“I’ve been working with Chris Jones, head of Welsh endurance, and we’re working on a lot of weaknesses to get ready for the steeplechase for next season,” said the 24-year-old. “Hopefully I can nail the Commonwealth Games standard quite early – I’ve run 8:37 but need to get it down to 8:35 – then hopefully get that World standard as well and have a breakthrough season.
“London is a big incentive. I’ve never been this focused.”
Josephine Moultrie is another athlete with Commonwealth Games qualification on her mind. The 25-year-old VP-Glasgow athlete won the women’s race in 34:22 and was followed home by Jenny Bannerman in 35:26 and Louise Mercer.
“I enjoyed it and it was about 30 seconds faster than the Scottish 10km at Stirling so I am pleased with that improvement,” Moultrie said.
“I will probably look to do the Leeds 10km at the start of November ahead of the cross-country season, and the Euro Cross trials in Liverpool.
“Really, the road races are just to get me used to some longer, faster running with a view to improving my endurance for a move up to 5000m on the track next summer. That is still the goal but this just takes me out of my comfort zone a little bit.
“It was hard going up the hill at the start but after a bit I was into my stride and there were a group of guys I could keep running with. It felt good and I’m happy with the time.”
