ALMOST every league paid tribute to the two Aldershot athletes who died last week.

Other events to show respect included the Cross Challenge at Milton Keynes, parkruns. It even crossed into Europe. The races at Atapuerca, where the Aldershot girls were planning to run, also paid their respects. Fittingly, AFD runners dominated the Hampshire League where the girls had excelled.

SENBERE TEFERI beat world cross-country champion Agnes Tirop in the opening race of the IAAF Cross Country Permit series.

Teferi won the 8km race in 24:48, four seconds ahead of Tirop, who is returning from knee and Achilles injuries.

Alice Aprot finished third with reigning champion Belaynesh Oljira fourth.

Ireland’s Fionnuala McCormack was the top European finisher in fifth.

The Wicklow woman is stepping up her preparations ahead of the Irish championships in Abbotstown later this month and European Championships in Chia, Italy, in December.

Kate Hulls was the first Briton, in eighth, one place ahead of Elinor Kirk.

Aweke Ayalew of Bahrain edged Ugandan Timothy Toroitich to win the men’s race as both shared the winning time of 25:05 with Ayalew coming from behind.

Reigning five-time champion Imane Merga was third. “I promise to come back next year to resume my winning streak,” he said. Antonio Abadia was the top Spanish finisher in 25:34, one second and one place ahead of European 5000m champion Ilias Fifa.

Dewi Griffiths was the leading Briton in 14th.

Mahamed Mahamed finished fourth in the junior race and Zoe Wassell matched her her mother Jane’s second in the W50 race at the Masters International with second place in the under-20 race.
