TRADITIONALLY, Brazil has never been an athletics superpower and South America generally is hardly one of track and field’s epicentres. The host of the 2016 Olympics is unashamedly football crazy and even the athletics arena staging the Games – the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange – is named after the long-time president of FIFA.
