Sugar shock: sweet drinks promoted fluid loss
RESULTS of a new animal study published in the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology suggests that drinking soft drinks to rehydrate makes matters worse.
In the trial, laboratory animals with mild heat-induced dehydration were given access to either a fructoseglucose water (similar to soft drinks), plain water or water sweetened with stevia, a naturally sweet plant compound with no calories.
