13 MINUTES

Rated 2 out of 5

CHRISTIAN FRIEDEL, KATHARINA SCHÜTTLER, BURGHART KLAUSSNER

Things automatically begin on a positive for director Oliver Hirschbiegel. When your last feature film was Diana, there’s little opportunity to make a film that could possibly be much worse. 13 Minutes is indeed a sturdy and cohesive biopic, this time about Johann Georg Elser (Christian Friedel), a man who tried and failed to assassinate Adolf Hitler back in 1939. The problem here is that, while the drama unfolds in a competently consistent fashion, it fails to fully grip the audience the way it should do given its harrowing source material. There is a brave level of grit and poignancy that feels void within the story and instead we’re left with an enjoyable but forgettable drama that we’ve all seen before.
