BRÜNO

IS SACHA BARON COHEN'S MOCKUMENTARY A SUBVERSIVE CRITIQUE OF HOMOPHOBIA AT WORK IN SOCIETY, OR A TACTLESS STUNT FOR CHEAP LAUGHS AT THE EXPENSE OF GAY MEN?

‘Can’t you take a joke?’ It’s the defence of every bully and many gay men remember it well from the school playground. But there’s a big difference between bullying and well-intentioned humour. So which of these best describes Brüno?

The mockumentary film revolves around flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter Brüno Gehard, created and played by Sacha Baron Cohen. When Brüno is fired from his TV show and dumped by his boyfriend, he leaves Vienna for the US, where he pursues his ambition of becoming "the biggest Austrian superstar since Hitler". This involves attempting to make a sex tape with a straight politician, going to army boot camp to try and turn himself straight, and appearing on a TV talk show with his adopted African ‘gayby’.
