THE DANISH GIRL

4/5

ALICIA VAKANDER, EDDIE REDMAYNE

In this remarkable 1920s biography, Eddie Redmayne stars as Lili Elbe, a woman born in a man’s body at a time before the word ‘transgender’ became part of modern vocabulary. Whilst presenting the transformation from the born identity of Einar to the realisation of her authentic self – Lili, this period drama is an unconventional love story between the protagonist and her supportive wife (Vikander). The film caters for a wide audience, and is visibly careful in never being too shocking, but this loses some of the emotional punch. It's still an insightful and educational display of the confusions and obstacles that the trans community still often face today. All in all, The Danish Girl has two brilliant performances from its two leads. JANUARY 1ST
