Nile Rodgers

GIVEN HIS PACKED SCHEDULE (inishing a new Chic album, producing numerous artists, touring the world), you wouldn’t think Nile Rodgers would have time for charity work, but greeting me at a fundraising Autism Rocks gig, he insists musicians have a duty to help others.

“It could be that because I’m in the music business I see it more, but I know people in the arts on every level — ilm, theatre, ine arts — and musicians are the people I call on irst, knowing they’ll always do charity stuff for me,” he says.

Nile’s own charity stuff — he raises money for autism research — includes running through Chic hits such as Le Freak as well as collaborations with Madonna (Like A Virgin), Bowie (Let’s Dance), Diana Ross (I’m Coming Out) and Sister Sledge (We Are Family).

The 64-year-old New Yorker’s journey from the son of heroin addicts to disco king and guitarist/ writer/producer extraordinaire is considered legendary, yet, he says: “Yes, I’ve had a massive number of hits, but can you imagine the amount of failures it takes to get all those hits? Most people don’t remember the lops, but there have been many.”
